Suggested Northern Hills Itinerary

  • Depart Rapid City, SD via I-90 West going towards Sturgis, SD
  • Visit Bear Butte State Park outside Sturgis, SD
  • Continue East on I-90E to exit 14
  • Visit the High Plain Western Heritage Museum
  • Drive Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway (hwy 14a)
  • Look for Bridal Veil Falls
  • Eat Lunch at the Latchstring Inn next to the Spearfish Caynon Lodge
  • Walk the nature hike to Spearfish Creek Falls behind the Latchstring Inn
  • Visit Roughlock Falls
  • Continue to Cheyanne Cross and turn left on hwy 85 to Lead, SD
  • Visit the Open Cut Mine and the Homestake Visitors Center
  • Walk through historic downtown Lead, SD
  • Continue to Deadwood, SD
  • Visit Mount Moriah Cemetary, Adam's Museum and House and walk the cobblestone streets. Be ready for the street shootout 3 times a day on main street in Deadwood
  • Visit Tatanka: Story of the Bison North of Deadwood.
  • Leave Deadwood, SD via highway 385 and travel to highway 44
  • Turn Left on highway 44 and travel into Rapid City
  • Visit Thunder Head Falls and Black Hills Caverns & Storybook Island. Wonderful for kids
  • Continue down highway 44 (Jackson Blvd) to downtown Rapid City
