• Travel the purple route to visit more of our rugged country filled with natural hot springs, dinosaurs and wild mustangs. Wind Cave National Park is an easy trip from Custer State Park or Hot Springs. You'll find herds of buffalo and towns of prairie dogs. Visit Wind Cave, the 4th longest cave in the world! Visit historic Hot Springs, an official 2009 Distinctive Destination.
1 hr - Custer State Park Wildlife Loop/Red Rt
The loop takes about 1 hour to drive straight through but go slower and take your time searching for the big herds. Take the gravel side roads for an adventure!
2-3 hrs - Wind Cave National Park
Wind Cave National Park includes 30 miles of trails amoungst the mixed grass prairie and wildlife. Visit Wind Cave to experience an underground adventure. There’s also a junior ranger program for kids!
1 hr - Mammoth Site, Hot Springs
The worlds largest Mammoth research facility. Take the 30-40 minute guided at this active paleontological dig site and view Ice Age fossils exhibited as they are found. Ask about the Junior Paleontologist program.
2-4 hrs - Evans Plunge
The worlds largest natural warm water indoor
swimming pool. With slides and other interactive
playgrounds, this is a great relaxing adventure.
1-2 hrs - Downtown Hot Springs
Historic downtown recentely recognized as a
“Distinctive Destination with unique shops, galleries, coffee houses, book stores, and restaurants that occupy magnificent century-old sandstone buildings.
2-3 hrs - Wild Horse Sanctuary
Choose from a list of different guided tours including 2 hr, 3 hr, Adventure,and Photographers Tours. Tours take you up close into the herds as well as visit
petroglyphs and Native American Ceremonial sites.
1-2 hrs - Custer, SD
Visit the Custer County Courthouse museum,
Flintstones Bedrock City and nearby Jewel Cave
